Kai Moa’s debut EP, Some of My Best Friends Are…Electric Sheep, arrives less like a neatly packaged introduction and more like a laboratory left running after hours. Across its tracks, the Birmingham-based producer pulls from IDM, techno, ambient, industrial, jazz, dubstep and alt-pop, but the appeal is not simply in the breadth of those influences. It is in how deliberately he lets them interfere with one another.
The EP’s final piece, which completes a run of singles dating back to June, is arguably its clearest statement of intent. It opens in a harsh, industrial register, with glitches and fractured rhythms suggesting a dystopian machine slowly coming to life. Then the track slips sideways. Piano enters, the textures become more spacious, and the music takes on the looseness of psychedelic jazz before a furious drum solo pushes the whole thing towards collapse.
That solo is important. Moa’s background as a professional drummer gives the track a physicality that could easily be lost inside its electronic detail. Rather than treating percussion as another programmed component, he uses it as a source of volatility. The tension keeps accumulating until the track detonates into a dark techno pulse, exchanging cosmic drift for the claustrophobia of a low-ceilinged club.
There is a risk in working this eclectically. Genre collision can become an aesthetic in itself, with experimentation valued simply because it sounds experimental. Moa mostly avoids that trap by giving his shifts a sense of movement. The EP feels interested in transformation, not just juxtaposition.
Even the title, Some of My Best Friends Are…Electric Sheep, points towards that instinct to splice disparate ideas together. Moa’s artistic identity is built around the same principle: combining rather than choosing.
What makes the EP matter is not that it contains many influences. Plenty of electronic music does. It is that Kai Moa seems genuinely curious about what happens when those influences stop behaving themselves. Some of My Best Friends Are…Electric Sheep is a promising debut because its strangest moments feel less like detours than the point.
