How Calgary’s Weather Shapes the Way We Work Out (& What to Do About It)

The now-called “blue-sky city” of Calgary doesn’t always represent its title. In fact, one of the most
common conversation starters for one Calgarian to another is complaining about how bad the
weather is.

Calgary weather is notorious for being both unpredictable and relentless. And for many Calgarians,
the unusual changes and brutal storms strip people away from fitness routines they develop during
the summer. But rather than complaining about how the weather prevents you from doing what you love outside, take a moment to recognize what things you can do despite the rainy skies and gruesome
snowstorms.

How does Calgary weather affect Calgarian fitness routines?

One of the most obvious challenges is snowstorms, which in recent years have hit Calgary as early as
September and lasted well into May. Morning runs and evening walks quickly disappear from most
people’s routines as black ice and bulky snow boots take over the city’s streets. And as if blizzards
weren’t discouraging enough, Calgary is also no stranger to other types of storms, from freezing rain
to sudden spring hail. The weather rarely plays fair.

But changes in the weather preventing proactiveness go far beyond physical weather. One of the
worst weather conditions is some we can’t even see. CBC News says that chinooks are partial to
blame for migraines
, due to Calgary’s location next to the Rockies and east of the Pacific Ocean,
which makes our home prone to warming winds from across the mountains, about 30 to 35 days
out of the year
. Not many people run 5 km with a raging migraine.

Furthermore, weather changes in Calgary can exacerbate joint pain. When barometric pressure (the
weight of the air pressing against the Earth’s surface) drops before a storm, it typically causes body
tissues to contract, resulting in swelling and subsequently, pain in the joints
. As Calgary is known to
experience unpredictable storms, joint pain numbers increase, preventing those affected from
taking proactive measures.

What to do?

Despite all of the reasons why Calgary weather can negatively impact fitness plans, it should never
be an excuse to stop being proactive. Some of the best things to do include changing your fitness
routines to accommodate the different seasons.

Summer in Calgary can be unpredictable, swinging between rain and sunshine. Planning outdoor
walks for clear days and opting for light stretching or indoor cardio when it rains can help keep your
routine consistent and set your body up for long-term success (pun intended).

The same concept applies to the fall and winter months. Indoor fitness, even at home, without
having to drive through snow and slush to a gym, could influence your mindset in working out
anyways. Simple exercises with only a few materials, such as resistance bands and small weights can
go a long way in a replacement for a gym membership.

Migraines and joint pain caused by changing weather patterns should not be an excuse to stop being
proactive. In fact, maintaining consistent fitness routines during unpredictable seasons can
naturally help prevent symptoms of internal pain. Low-impact activities such as walking can reduce
joint pain and headaches, even when done indoors. Beyond physical activity, proper hydration and a
balanced diet are essential as they often improve both body and mind. Be sure to consult your
healthcare professional to determine which techniques are best for you.

Don’t let the wind and water keep you from moving, Calgary!
