The creative director carousel is turning again, and this time it may stop at one of fashion’s most compelling names. Puck News reports that Martine Rose, the British-Jamaican designer behind one of menswear’s most influential independent labels, has signed a deal to take over Balenciaga from Pierpaolo Piccioli. Balenciaga and its parent company Kering have stayed silent so far. The industry has not, and the speculation alone says a lot about how much weight Rose’s name carries.
For anyone who has followed her career, the story has a neat symmetry. In 2015, Demna brought Rose into Balenciaga as a menswear consultant, and over the next few years she helped build the boxy tailoring, oversized proportions and street-level attitude that came to define the house. A decade on, she could be walking back through those doors with the top job.
Rose launched her own label in 2007, starting with men’s shirting, and built it slowly into a cult brand. Her clothes play with the familiar: the office shirt, the football jersey, the dad trouser. She pushes their proportions until they feel strange and new. Her references come from the raves, reggae sound systems and rude-boy style of the London she grew up in, and she has shown collections in markets, climbing centres and suburban cul-de-sacs rather than polished venues. Collaborations with Nike, Supreme and Clarks have carried that sensibility well beyond the fashion crowd.
That would be a sharp turn from Piccioli’s Balenciaga. The former Valentino creative director arrived in 2025 with a focus on couture-level craft and the sculptural legacy of founder Cristóbal Balenciaga. Rose speaks a different language. Her work is about youth culture, identity and the communities that actually decide how people dress.
The appointment would also matter beyond the runway. Black designers have shaped luxury fashion for decades, often without being handed the keys to its biggest houses. If the reports hold, Rose would become one of only a handful of Black women ever trusted to lead a major European fashion brand. That kind of milestone shouldn’t still be rare, but it is.
Nothing is official yet. But if Rose’s career has proven anything, it’s that she doesn’t need a press release to get fashion’s attention.
